Bramley Historical Research Society

The Bramley Historical Research Society aims to record information about the historical, social, architectural and physical development of the village of Bramley, and to make it easily available via a web site (www.bhrs.org.uk)

This web-based record is produced from the work of professional historians, enthusiastic amateurs and residents past and present who have something to tell us about Bramley's past. Everyone is warmly invited to make contact with the society, whether or not they have a special interest or skill. As was observed at our very first meeting, someone with an 'armchair' interest in the past can still make a valuable contribution by being an informal ambassador for the group in the wider community. For those who do have the time and interest however there are numerous aspects of Bramley's past that need researching: to give one example, little is currently recorded about the lives of the hundreds of refugees from eastern Europe who came to live in the army camp after the Second World War, lives that will remain unrecorded forever if something is not done soon.

Bramley Sunshine Club

The Bramley Sunshine Club meets every third Tuesday of the month at 2pm in the Bramley Room at Bramley Village Hall to enjoy a chat during a tea of sandwiches and cake, followed by a game of bingo, beetle drive or a quiz and, of course, a raffle.

The members of the club are mostly in their 60's to 90's.  In the summer months they organise various outings and in December they always enjoy a pantomime and a Christmas lunch together!

As they don't receive any grants, their only means of income is a little profit from monthly raffles and 'bring and buy' sales.  Another fundraiser is the Annual Winter Draw, proceeds from which go towards trips.

If you are interested in joining, please go along on a Tuesday or ring for more details - the club looks forward to meeting many more ladies and gentlemen from the village.

Bramley Voluntary Care Group

Bramley Voluntary Care Group is run by local people for those residents in Bramley who are unable to use public transport and have no-one to take them for doctor, dentist or hospital appointments or to collect prescriptions, or to take them to visit friends or relatives who are sick or hospitalised. Donations are based on destination, and can be either in cash or travel tokens. If you need our services, then do get in touch with Sheila Haswell on 882161 or Phyl Davies on 881296.

So that we can offer this service to our local golden oldies, and not-so-oldies, we do need a pool of able-bodied souls who can be called on every now and then to give lifts or collect prescriptions. This could be maybe once or twice a week, or sometimes once or twice a month, so it isn't time consuming, but means a lot to people who need us. Driving expenses are paid. If you'd like more details, then phone Jenny Edwards for a chat on 880829, or get in touch with Sheila Haswell on 882161 or Phyl Davies on 881296 to register.

Bramley WI Lite

"The Women's Institute plays a unique role in providing women with educational opportunities, the chance to build new skills and, most importantly, make new friends. As a member of the WI you can take part in a wide variety of activities and campaign on issues that matter. Using this as a foundation, Bramley WI Lite has re-written the rules!  Have a look around our website (www.bramleywilite.com) to find out all about us. You will always be welcome at a Bramley WI Lite meeting.  If we aren't to your taste, maybe we can help you find a WI that is, or even inspire you to set up one of your own.  Our group meets every 4th Thursday in the month at 8pm in the Bramley Room, Bramley Village Hall."

Bramley Women’s Institute

Bramley W.I. was formed in 1919 and was originally an afternoon Institute. It folded for a few months in 1990 due to lack of officers but reformed as an evening Institute since so many members worked and now has nearly as many on the Committee as it has members. Bramley W.I. is fun loving and welcomes visitors be they young or old. The program is varied with speakers, demonstrations and social activities. There is an active drama group who enjoy entertaining not only sister Institutes at their Christmas and Birthday meetings but to some of the village's elderly and infirm. Bramley W.I. also undertakes village improvements for villagers, for example the Millennium Garden Project and an on going project for the village hall in the shape of an artistic collage.

The Bramley W.I. meets on the second Thursday in the month in the Village Hall at 7.45pm
